The Namibian Sand Dunes

The Namibian sand dunes were more picturesque in real life than in the photos. At sunrise and sunset, the sand truly glows an orangy-red...and trust us, we saw them from the ground AND from the sky!

We spent a lovely two days camping in Sesriem, placed at the start of the sand dunes and managed to climb part of one on the first night in time for sunset. We drove back to have dinner around the camp fire and get an early night sleep to be fresh for our scenic flight over the dunes the next morning.

The scenic flight was amazing and we spent over an hour flying over the dunes right to the coastal area and then back again to see the fairy circles in the sand and some game walking over the dunes. A beautiful sight and wonderful experience!

We spent the afternoon taking it easy in the heat of the day, swimming in the pool, however, as we were based under a massive tree with low branches, Joost managed to bump his head twice (so hard he managed to draw a bit of blood!)...but don't worry, we don't think any further permanent damage can be done! ;) A cold beer and big kiss later and he forgot all about it. :) He still doesn't remember much from the rest of that day, so hopefully this post will help him fill in the empty bits.

In the late afternoon we made our way out to Sossusvlei and took a walk to Dead vlei, which was quite a contrast (Sossusvlei being the valley with water where animals roam and Dead vlei with no water, looking desolate and sparse).

The next morning we woke up at 4.45am to be the first in the park to drive to Sossusvlei for sunrise, where we had a picnic breakfast. Unfortunately, I missed catching the springbok at the waterhole in time so Joost kindly posed as a springbok for me!! (me thinks the bumps on the head MAY have affected him a little bit!) - though they do make for some of my favourite photo's. :)

We then returned to camp to pack up and made the day long drive to Ai-Ais in Fish River Canyon. This was the end to our lovely stay in the Namibian sand dunes.

ps. of course, there was a little more guitar playing and lots more photo's taken, so here is a another song and a few more photo's of the dunes
