First couple of days in Santiago

We hopped on a sleeper bus with fold-down flat beds to make our way to Santiago. The 9-hour journey could have been a lot more comfortable if: 1) they made sure tall people would fit on these beds; 2) we weren't located next to the toilet. As we hadn't planned ahead and only booked the tickets at the last minute in order to ensure that we could meet up with our Spanish friend David from Lancaster in Santiago, we were left with the crappy seats. Literally.

After the rather arduous journey, we arrived in Santiago before 7am, grabbed a coffee to buy some time before heading off to the small apartment that we'd rented. After a very smooth metro ride we arrived in Santa Lucia and headed for our building. We were lucky as they had an apartment available for us which we could move into straight away, so we were able to refresh ourselves before heading out to explore the city.

That evening we met up with David, who was in town for a meeting with his Teach For All counterparts from around the world. We went for a lovely dinner in a Chilean restaurant and had a great time catching up.

The next few days we spent exploring the city, climbing hills, visiting museums, and enjoying great food and some lovely ice cream.

One of the highlights of the stay was a visit to the Aquitania Vineyard, just outside of Santiago. We went on a private tour of the vineyard, the cellars, learning about the wine-making process, and subsequently tasting some very nice wines, including a very recommendable Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon.

From Santiago, we continued on our wine pilgrimage and headed to Mendoza.
