So, in Puerto Natales we boarded the Navimag ferry, a 123 metre cargo ship with a number of cabins, for our four day adventure sailing through straights, past fjords, mountain ranges, glaciers and volcanoes. It turned out to be an incredible journey through some of the most visually stunning regions of the world. The weather held up well, mostly sunshine with a few clouds and the passage as a whole was as calm and smooth as can be.
Along the way, we spotted hundreds of Minke whales, dolphins, sea lions, penguins and a variety of albatrosses and other birds. The blue whales that the crew had spotted on their inbound journey did not show themselves to us unfortunately, they had journeyed further out to sea.
There were about two hundred other people on board, many of whom were on similar trips through South America, so we shared lots of stories, swapped recommendations, and sampled a range of Chilean beers and wines. On the last night, we were even persuaded to play some bingo, and Christel managed to win one of the rounds, making us the proud owners of a shot glass, a Navimag fleece and a bottle of Chilean red, which we shared with our newly made friends.
At the end of the journey, we arrived in Puerto Montt where we spent one night before heading further north to the Chilean lake district.
